Term 3

We have had a wonderful start to the second semester in Room 20. The students have been working hard in all learning areas and it's wonderful to see their love for learning grow. They have developed greater independence and are making pleasing progress. We had a wonderful day celebrating Book Week on Friday, 20 August. The students looked fantastic during the parade!

A major focus this term is on STEM. We have started working on our learning journey project which the students are excited about. It has been fascinating to see Room 20 use critical and creative thinking skills to plan, problem solve and develop their ideas. I know they are excited to share their learning experience and final creations with you at the end of the term!

Last week, students worked in teams to build 3D shapes and towers using sticks and Blu-Tack. They thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Please see some pictures below:

In Maths, we are learning about money and calculating change. We have created our very own Cafe20, whereby students have designed and created their own, unique menus. They have had fun ordering from each other, calculating the cost of their meals and finding the correct change. Here are a few photos of our menus:

During HASS, students have been conducting their own research to gather information about Australian celebrations. They have worked together to find and summarise facts to create effective and informative posters. They have worked collaboratively in groups to organise their information in a clear and concise manner, which they will use to present to the class. This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to learn important skills such as teamwork, reading, writing, comprehending, summarising and presenting information. They have also learnt about plagiarism and how to use the internet responsibly. They have all worked very hard! Here are some photos:

Please encourage your child to read as much as possible. Students should be completing Literacy Pro quizzes online each week. Congratulations to those children who have already received their bronze certificates. We are very proud of you! I hope to see more students achieve their goals in the next few weeks.

We have had a lot of fun learning new things in Room 20 and look forward to the remaining weeks of Term 3. Time certainly does fly while having fun in our classroom!

Congratulations to these students who received their first Literacy Pro certificates. Keep up the good work! Continue to read and complete your quizzes to earn your certificates Room 20.

Super Scientist

In Term Two, the Super Scientist challenge will be in the form of an experiment. All students have been invited to research any experiment and present their information to the the in a short presentation (2 to 5 minutes). Students are allowed to use resources such as posters, charts, props and PowerPoint to support their presentation.

The Year Three class presentations will take place in Week 6 of Term 2.

Each Year Three class will select their finalists and they will move forward to the Year Level Super Scientist challenge.

I look forward to seeing all the wonderful presentations.

If you have any questions about the Super Scientist Challenge, please come and see me.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Term 2 Welcome

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and are ready the busy 11 week term ahead. As you are all aware, we are currently preparing for NAPLAN which will commence in week 4. I am so proud of all the students' hard work and determination which they have demonstrated throughout the year. We will continue to revise and consolidate reading, writing, spelling, grammar and maths concepts during class, so that each student feels confident to achieve their personal best.

Please ensure that homework tasks are carefully supervised in order to support and help your child's learning process. Remember to encourage your child to read as much as possible and complete the quizzes on Literacy Pro to improve their fluency and comprehension skills throughout the term. We will have a class challenge to see who is reading the most words! Typing is an important skill which each student needs to develop. Typing Club is a fantastic site which is fun and interactive, improving typing accuracy and speed at the same time. Your child's login details are at the back of their homework books and they are encouraged to practise as much as possible from home.

I look forward to a productive and happy Term with your children. Please don't hesitate to contact me should you wish to discuss their progress or concerns.

Term 1 Overview

Room 20 have enjoyed a very busy and fun first term in Year 3. They have embraced the many learning opportunities within the classroom and made the most of each exciting day. We have spent time revising important academic concepts and have gained valuable new skills.

 Literacy Pro

This term the students started Literacy Pro, a wonderful program which promotes a love for reading and comprehension. It is an engaging and interactive site which students can access from home. It is a good way to encourage daily reading and an easy way to track your child's progress. Students can quickly gain points and increase their word count to compete with their peers. Each child reads books which are levelled to their individual ability and I can track their progress online. Please encourage your child to use this opportunity to log into their account and complete reading quizzes at home.

ICT

Students have enjoyed spending time on iPads and laptops this term. They have developed new skills during ICT lessons with Mr Wallis and have shown an increased ability to conduct independent research during HASS. Students have used the iPads and laptops to research various natural features in Australia, as well as our neighbouring countries. Each child has a personal login for Typing Club and they are encouraged to login and practise their typing skills at home. Typing is an important skill that many students still need to develop.

Harmony Week

On Friday 26 March, we celebrated Harmony Day and the children looked fantastic in their traditional dress and orange clothing. We discussed that everyone belongs and the importance of accepting and respecting each other. The students proudly showed off their outfits during the school parade and we spent 2 fun afternoons with our Kindy friends. It was lovely to see how nurturing and patient everyone was while helping the younger children. We painted hands to make an ''All Around the World" display and the children enjoyed reading stories to the little ones.

Awards

Congratulations to Chloe and Ayman who received merit certificates this term. Keep up the excellent work!

Holiday Break

With the Easter Holidays fast approaching, it is a good idea to use this time to think of ways to keep your children engaged and stimulated during the break. Whilst spending time together and taking a moment to recharge your batteries is important, it is equally important to ensure your child does not spend too much time in front of screens. Please try limit their screen time and encourage daily reading, mental maths and opportunities to learn through while having fun.

Some ideas:

  1. Read and follow a recipe.
  2. Measure out ingredients and talk about the units  - what is double, half, etc.
  3. Create a holiday journal and write about your experiences - highlight the WOW words.
  4. Research a topic of interest.
  5.  Count the money in your piggy bank - convert to dollars and cents.
  6. Visit your local library.
  7. Practise telling the time - how long was the drive, what time did you wake up, how many hours did you go to the beach?
Parent Interviews

A friendly reminder that parent interviews will commence on Tuesday 30 March at 12:30pm. Kindly note that school finishes at 11:45 and students need to be collected promptly. Each interview is 10 minutes. Please ensure that you arrive on time to avoid any unnecessary delays.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful holiday! Looking forward to the new term, where I know your child will continue to make the most of each new learning opportunity.

Speaking and Listening Presentations

 Dear Parents,

Next week, your child will be asked to present a 2 - 3 minute speech all about themselves and what makes them special, as part of our Speaking and Listening program. Our class presentations will start on the 3rd of March.

We will be assessing them on their volume, speed, voice, body language, eye contact and their content. We have sent home an "All About Me" sheet for the students to complete before their presentation.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
